Summary

West Wortham Elementary and Middle School serves about 844 students in grades K-8 in Saucier, Mississippi, as part of the Harrison County School District, and it stands out as one of the top-performing schools in the state. In 2025-26 it ranked 12th out of 377 Mississippi schools (97th percentile, 5 stars), and it has consistently placed in the top 20 over the past decade, with a strong rebound after the pandemic. Despite 69.4% of students qualifying for free/reduced-price lunch, the school outpaces far more affluent schools and even its own high-achieving district, which ranks 15th statewide.

Math and science are the school’s clear strengths. In 2025-26, 3rd-grade math proficiency hit 96.1% — nearly double the state average — and every grade level from 3rd through 8th posted math scores well above state and district averages. Science is equally impressive, with 94.5% proficiency in 5th grade and 85.9% in 8th grade. By comparison, nearby North Gulfport, a K-8 school with a similar student-teacher ratio, posted just 17.5% in 3rd-grade math and 43.4% in 8th-grade science. English language arts is solid in early grades (82.1% in 3rd grade) but weaker in middle school, with 7th-grade ELA at 47% — the school’s main academic soft spot. Even so, West Wortham beats its closest high-performing peer, North Woolmarket Elementary and Middle School, in most math and science categories despite having a higher poverty rate.

The school’s student-teacher ratio of 12.9 is favorable and likely supports strong instruction. However, chronic absenteeism has risen from 11.8% in 2018-19 to 21.8% in 2023-24, slightly above the district rate and worth watching. Some grade-level scores also fluctuate year to year — for example, 4th-grade math dropped from 89.2% to 71.6% — though this may reflect cohort differences rather than systemic issues. Overall, West Wortham is an exceptional school that delivers top-tier results, especially in math and science, while maintaining a resilient track record and a clear commitment to student success.

Open Quote The elementary end of
West Wortham has the better of the teaching staff. I found the teachers in the middle school end gossip with the children as much as the teenagers themselves do, and they use language that I could never imagine a teacher using! Close Quote

Open Quote I am pleased with the education and opportunities my children receive here. The teachers and administration work hard to make sure the children have every chance to learn. Close Quote

Open Quote Teachers here do not teach the students. They want the books to do all the teaching for them. Some kids have questions and they just tell the kids to go back and read the book/chapter. The are ineffective and rude. Close Quote
