Harrison County School District serves approximately 14,253 students across 22 schools in the Gulf Coast area of Mississippi, including 15 elementary schools, 3 middle schools, 3 high schools, and 1 alternative school. The district is a strong performer overall, ranking 15th out of 134 Mississippi districts with a 4-star rating, and it outperforms the state in most tested subjects despite an average free/reduced-lunch rate of 80.9%. Enrollment varies widely, from just 77 students at the Harrison County Child Development Center to 1,483 at Harrison Central High, with a median of about 529 students per school.

Families have excellent high school options. West Harrison High is the #1-ranked high school in Mississippi with a 94.1% graduation rate and the strongest test scores in nearly every subject, while D'Iberville High ranks #10 with the lowest chronic absenteeism among district high schools at 21.3%. Harrison Central High is a turnaround story, jumping from #90 to #18 in the state rankings, though its 83.2% graduation rate remains a challenge. At the elementary level, North Woolmarket Elementary and Middle ranks #4 in the state with the district's lowest poverty rate, while West Wortham Elementary and Middle (#12) and Lizana Elementary (#18) post exceptional math and science scores. Pineville Elementary, serving a 98.1% free/reduced-lunch population, still achieves top-60 status, proving poverty does not predict performance.

Chronic absenteeism is the clearest warning sign of struggle. The lowest-performing schools, including North Gulfport (28.8%), Crossroads Elementary (29.7%), and Bel-Aire Elementary (28.0%), all have the highest absenteeism, while top schools like North Woolmarket (15.4%) and Lyman Elementary (14.9%) have much better attendance. Science is a clear district strength, with 5th-grade proficiency at 82.3% versus the state's 71.5%, while 7th-grade ELA at 44.7% proficiency is a consistent districtwide weakness. The Harrison County Child Development Center offers a unique alternative program with a 5.1:1 student-teacher ratio and the lowest chronic absenteeism in the district.
