Waseca Intermediate School

Public Grades 4-6
Summary

Waseca Intermediate School is a public school in Waseca, Minnesota, serving 380 students in grades 4–6 as part of the Waseca Public School District, which is ranked 270th of 458 Minnesota districts (41st percentile, 2 stars).

In 2025–26, proficiency was 34.7% in math, 43.7% in reading, and 14.3% in science. That puts the school below its district in math (37.5%) and science (22.0%), slightly above the district in reading (42.3%), and below the state in all three subjects (44.9%, 48.6%, and 25.5%). The bigger story is a four-year slide in every subject: math has fallen from 47.29% in 2022–23 to 34.7%, reading from 50.0% to 43.7%, and science from 50.47% to 14.3% — a 36-point collapse. Reading is the relative strength, and sixth-grade reading (51.1%) is close to the state's 53.4%. The sharpest weak spots are fifth-grade math at 26.5% (15.4 points below the state) and fourth-grade reading at 34.2% (state: 48.8%).

Compared with nearby schools, results are mixed. Waseca Junior High, in the same district and only 0.22 miles away, now outperforms the Intermediate school in every subject — a reversal from 2024–25, when the Intermediate school led in reading and science. Owatonna Middle School, which has a similar free/reduced lunch rate, scores higher in math (42.6%) and reading (47.6%). Waterville-Elysian-Morristown Junior is stronger in math (50.5%) but lower in reading and science, while Morristown Elementary matches the school in reading and trails slightly in math. Waseca Intermediate does clearly outperform Faribault Middle in all subjects. Notably, its student-teacher ratio (12.7) is more favorable than several higher-scoring peers, suggesting staffing alone does not explain the results.
