Breckenridge Elementary

Breckenridge Elementary is a PK–6 school with roughly 265 students in the small western Minnesota community of Breckenridge, part of the Breckenridge Public School District. Just over half the student body comes from low-income households (53.2% in 2024-25), and class sizes have been steady at about 12 to 13 students per teacher.

For 2025-26, the school ranked 547th of 869 ranked Minnesota elementary schools — the 37th percentile, or 2 stars — a bit above its district's 35th-percentile standing. It outperforms the district in all three tested subjects: math 37.1% (district 33.1%), reading 39.1% (district 34.8%), and science 35.1% (district 25.2%). Science is the standout, running about 10 points above the state figure of 25.5%. Because grades 3–6 are tested in essentially one district building, the school's results and the district's elementary results are the same numbers.

The main concern is a slide from a 73rd-percentile peak in 2022-23 down to the mid-30s and now 37th, with proficiency below state in both math and reading. The weakness is concentrated in the youngest tested grades: 3rd-grade reading was 23.3% (state 46.8%) and 4th-grade reading 27.5% (state 48.8%), while grades 5 and 6 were at or above state. The strongest group in the building — this year's 6th graders — leaves after this year, which could keep overall results under pressure. Neither poverty rate nor class size explains the decline, since both were roughly flat. Nearby Campbell-Tintah Elementary, 14.65 miles away, has risen to the 50th percentile and now scores higher in math, but it serves about half the low-income share (27.3%) and has a much smaller enrollment, making its year-to-year swings larger.
