Breckenridge Middle/High School

Breckenridge Middle/High School is a grades 7–12 campus at 710 N 13th St in Breckenridge, Minnesota, serving 311 students as the largest secondary school in its immediate region and the flagship campus of the Breckenridge Public School District.

By state measures, the school sits in the middle-to-lower tier and has stayed in a narrow band for a decade: Breckenridge Middle/High School ranked 312th of 473 Minnesota schools in 2025–2026 (34th percentile, 2 stars), and its ten-year history never moved outside the 27th–51st percentile. What stands out most is a split between finishing and mastering. Graduation has exceeded the state's in all five reported years — 90.2% versus 84.9% in 2024–2025 — and the dropout rate was at or below the state in four of five years. Yet proficiency trailed the state in all three subjects in 2025–2026: math 29% versus 44.9%, reading 30.1% versus 48.6%, and science 21.1% versus 25.5%.

First, weakness is concentrated rather than uniform: 8th graders beat the state in math (47.4% versus 42.3%), while 7th graders trailed by more than 22 points in both math and reading — a roughly 30-point internal gap between adjacent grades. Second, subgroup results have fallen sharply, with low-income students dropping to the 6th percentile (0 stars) in 2025–2026 and special education students at the 3rd percentile (0 stars). Science, a relative strength a year earlier, lost its edge. Compared with nearby Campbell-Tintah Secondary — 49 students, and a 14.29% free/reduced-lunch rate versus Breckenridge's 38.59% — Breckenridge matches it on graduation and exceeds it in reading and science, producing comparable results from a harder starting point.
