Summary

Dort Elementary School is a small elementary school in Roseville, MI, serving 215 students from Pre-K through 5th grade as part of the Roseville Community Schools district.

For parents, the most encouraging news is that Dort shows a clear strength in English Language Arts (reading and writing). In recent testing, 4th and 5th graders at Dort scored notably higher than the district average, and in some years their scores nearly matched the state average. This suggests that literacy instruction is a real bright spot. The school also demonstrates effectiveness with its African American students, earning a 4-star rating in a recent year—a standout compared to its overall performance. However, math is a significant challenge. Proficiency rates in math are consistently low, with a sharp drop in 5th grade math to just 10.3% in the most recent year. The gap between reading and math is striking—in one year, 4th grade reading proficiency was 43.2% while math was only 11.4%. This points to a need for targeted help in math.

Chronic absenteeism is a major concern, affecting 43% of students—well above the state average of 27.9%. This likely impacts overall learning. When comparing Dort to Kaiser Elementary School, a nearby school with a similar percentage of students on free/reduced lunch, Kaiser consistently ranks higher overall. Kaiser also has a lower student-teacher ratio (11.5 vs. 18) and higher per-student spending. On a positive note, Dort's 5th grade science scores showed a promising jump in one recent year, nearly matching the state average, which shows the school is capable of strong performance in specific subjects. For parents, this means Dort offers solid reading instruction and some bright spots, but math support and addressing attendance will be key areas to watch.

Open Quote The scores show what the school is......poor. The teachers are quite frankly lazy, not all them of course, but enough that you get the impression it is completely acceptable to miss a lot of work days, not correct and return assignments, or not plan out your lessons and be prepared for the school day. They spend time on their devices, and talk down to students. The math curriculum is horrible and not globally competitive(or with Michigan). It jumps from concept to concept, without spending enough time and practice on one area so that the kids can solidly learn it, and the scores show it. My student didn't receive spelling, or language for a good portion of the year. The Roseville school board needs to wake up, these kids' futures are at stake. Consult with successful districts so our schools can get back on track...........please Close Quote
