Summary

Pattengill School is an elementary school located in Lansing, Michigan, serving grades PK-8 with a total enrollment of 633 students. It is part of the Lansing Public School District, which has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Pattengill School faces significant challenges, with consistently low academic performance across all grade levels and subject areas. For example, in 2024-2025, the percentage of students proficient or better in M-Step English Language Arts ranged from 11.1% in 3rd grade to 35.9% in 5th grade, compared to the state averages of 38.9% to 44.4%. The school also has extremely high chronic absenteeism rates, ranging from 29.5% to 80.8% in recent years, which is significantly higher than the state and district averages. Pattengill School serves a high-poverty student population, with 88.5% to 90.68% of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch in recent years, compared to the state average of around 50%.

Interestingly, Pattengill School's performance is significantly lower than the nearby East Lansing School District schools, such as Whitehills Elementary, Robert L. Green Elementary, and Glencairn School, which all have higher academic proficiency rates, lower chronic absenteeism, and serve student populations with lower percentages of free/reduced-price lunch recipients. Despite the school's relatively high per-student spending of around $18,000, which is higher than the state average, this has not translated into improved academic outcomes.

Open Quote This school does not provide an adequate education for young children. The administration allows rampant proliferation of racism and is unable to deal with the violence brought to the classroom by students. Classes are disorganized and unreasonable students aren't learning, they are filling out worksheets with mindless answers and appeased with constant movies and television. Technology services at this school are horrid. Its almost as if they do not even have an IT department. There is no actual biotech included in their curriculum this is just an elementary with a fancy name but incredibly low student performance and test scores. This school objectively ranks among the worst in Michigan among student satisfaction, personal and professional growth, and engagement with material and I urge you not to enroll your pupils in this program. It is a waste of your time, effort, sanity and money. Close Quote
