Summary:

The Lansing Public School District serves 23 schools in Michigan’s capital area, including elementary, middle, high, and alternative programs, and faces significant challenges with high poverty rates and academic performance well below state averages. However, a few schools prove that strong outcomes are possible even in this demanding environment.

Post Oak School is the district’s clear academic leader, earning a 3-star rating and ranking in the 57th percentile statewide. Its 3rd-grade reading proficiency (56.5%) and 8th-grade science proficiency (44.7%) actually exceed state averages, and it also has the lowest chronic absenteeism rate (36.1%) among larger schools. Cavanaugh School is another standout, having jumped from the 12th to the 73rd percentile over the past decade; its 3rd-grade math and reading scores (both 56.1%) now surpass state levels. Among traditional high schools, Eastern High School leads with a 97% graduation rate and the lowest dropout rate (1.2%), plus SAT reading proficiency (37.9%) nearly double that of JW Sexton High School.

District-wide, math proficiency is especially low—only 8.5% of 11th graders are proficient on the SAT math section versus 26.5% statewide. Chronic absenteeism is a major issue, affecting 52.8% of students on average, roughly double the state rate. Yet the district posts a strong 93.8% graduation rate, well above Michigan’s 84%, suggesting students stay enrolled even if test scores lag. Alternative schools vary widely: Capital Area K12 Online reports a perfect 100% graduation rate, while Ingham County Youth Center has a 0% graduation rate and 50% dropout rate despite the highest per-student spending ($31,346). The pattern across schools is clear: those with lower poverty and better attendance, like Post Oak, perform best, while schools such as Sheridan Road (96% poverty, 57.7% absenteeism) struggle most. Early-grade interventions at Cavanaugh and Post Oak suggest focusing on PK-4 literacy and math could be the district’s most promising path forward.
