Summary

Tulip Grove Elementary is a public elementary school in Bowie, Maryland, serving 457 students in grades K-5. It is part of the Prince George's County Public Schools district, which is ranked 22 out of 25 in Maryland and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Tulip Grove Elementary consistently outperforms the county and state averages in both Mathematics and English Language Arts (ELA) proficiency across all grade levels. For the 2024-2025 school year, Tulip Grove's Mathematics proficiency rate for all grades is 34.4%, compared to 13.1% for Prince George's County and 26.5% for Maryland. In ELA, Tulip Grove's proficiency rate for all grades is 58.4%, compared to 38.3% for the county and 50.8% for the state. The school's performance is particularly strong in 3rd grade, where the Mathematics and ELA proficiency rates are 41.9% and 64.7%, respectively, outpacing the county and state averages.

While Tulip Grove's academic performance is generally stronger than the nearby High Bridge Elementary and Northview Elementary, it is outperformed by the nearby Heather Hills Elementary, a magnet school within the same district, which has proficiency rates above 70% for all grades in both Mathematics and ELA. Tulip Grove's higher spending per student compared to the state average may contribute to its stronger academic performance, but the school faces challenges in addressing its high chronic absenteeism rates and the achievement gap between its African American and White students.

Open Quote The teachers and staff are sweet, expert, and committed to the students' development. However, this school's quality is brought down by their current director. She willingly ignores behavioral issues and difficulties in students, antagonizes teachers, and creates conflicts with some parents. One example, witnessed by many students, teachers, and parents, was when there was a mother picking up her daughter from the nurse's office. She came in an uber, and had left her infant son in the uber to go pick up her daughter. The principal didn't like that, so she PICKED UP this mother's son without any right or consent, placed him on the curb, told the Uber to leave, and only told the mother after she came out from picking up her daughter. That kind of behavior is unacceptable. Close Quote

Open Quote My son is currently a 2nd grader at Tulip Grove and has been attending since kindergarten. The building is new and just reopened and is beautiful. The community is very involved and there is a sense of unity. Their after care program is exceptional with an array of activities that exceed expectations. The principal is a hard and tireless worker and students feel safe due to her presence. I highly recommend his school and believe it’s a hidden gem Close Quote
