Summary

Northview Elementary in Bowie, MD, is a public school serving 587 students in grades PK-5 within the Prince George's County Public Schools district, where over 60% of students qualify for free and reduced lunch.

Northview Elementary faces significant academic challenges, performing well below state averages and most nearby schools. In math, only 15.8% of students are proficient, compared to the state average of 27.1% and a staggering 80.8% at the top-performing Heather Hills Elementary, located just over a mile away. In English Language Arts (ELA), Northview's proficiency rate of 37.8% is the lowest in its cluster and far below the state average of 51.7%. A critical issue is chronic absenteeism, which has risen sharply to 32.0%—the highest among nearby schools and well above Heather Hills' rate of just 6.9%. This strong link between attendance and performance is a key area for improvement. There is also a notable gender achievement gap, with female students historically performing significantly better than male students.

Despite these challenges, there are some positive signs. Third-grade ELA proficiency (46.4%) actually exceeds the district average, suggesting early literacy instruction is a relative strength. However, this progress is not sustained into fourth grade, indicating a need for better support as students transition to more complex reading. The school's per-student spending ($17,321) is comparable to higher-performing neighbors, showing that funding alone is not the issue. The stark contrast with Heather Hills Elementary, just a mile away, highlights the potential for improvement by focusing on attendance and replicating successful strategies from a nearby top-ranked school.

Open Quote Northview is somewhat over-capacity and is suffering from PGCPS funding shortages causing declines in staffing throughout the district. The reported student/teacher ratio is overly optimistic--in 2011-12 many classes have over 30 students per teacher. The official ratio is probably impacted by factoring in teacher aides. That said, the school facilities are modern and the school administration has emphasized maintaining enrichment curricula such as music and art. Close Quote

Open Quote I have a 2nd grader who attends Northview. He started in the schools second year for 1st grade. I absolutely love the teachers & staff. The principal does a wonderful job of getting information sent home as well as automated telephone messages with information. The teachers seem to genuinely care about the students & want them to succeed. I with that the students in the TAG program went more than once a week (only complaint). Close Quote
