Summary

Indian Queen Elementary in Fort Washington, MD, is a small school serving 235 students from Pre-K through 5th grade, and it stands out as a high-performing option within the Prince George's County Public Schools district, where about 65% of its students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch.

Indian Queen is a relative bright spot in its area, ranking in the 42nd percentile statewide—significantly higher than nearby schools like Flintstone Elementary (17th percentile) and Apple Grove Elementary (12th percentile). The school’s greatest strength is English Language Arts (ELA), where 46.2% of students are proficient—nearly 8 points above the district average and close to the state average. It also excels with its low-income students, ranking in the 68th percentile statewide for this group. Additionally, the school has a lower chronic absenteeism rate (19.2%) compared to peers like Tayac Elementary (37.5%) and Oxon Hill Elementary (34.7%), and a favorable student-teacher ratio of 11.5 to 1, which supports a more intimate learning environment.

However, Indian Queen faces a significant challenge in mathematics. While 3rd graders perform near the state average in math (42.1%), proficiency plummets to just 9.8% in 4th grade and 11.1% in 5th grade—a sharp decline not seen in district or state data. Overall math proficiency is 21.7%, well below the state average of 27.1%. The school spends a high $22,979 per student, more than Flintstone Elementary ($18,251) but less than Forest Heights Elementary ($26,410), which has much lower performance. This suggests Indian Queen uses its resources effectively, but addressing the math decline after 3rd grade is critical to ensuring students are well-prepared for middle school.

Open Quote My children have done well at Indian Queen ES. The vast majority of staff really care about the students, not just their test scores. It is a diverse environment that has an awesome counselor and caring educators. I teach at another 4 out of 5 star rated school and turned down the opportunity to transfer my children because I believe this school is superior overall for a public school Close Quote
