Summary

John Hanson Montessori in Oxon Hill, MD, is a public Montessori school serving 496 students from Pre-Kindergarten through 8th grade, and it stands out dramatically from nearby schools in the Prince George's County Public Schools district due to its unique educational model and strong student outcomes.

The most striking difference is in English Language Arts (ELA), where 65.2% of students are proficient—far exceeding the district average of 38.9% and the state average of 51.7%. This is a massive advantage over nearby traditional schools like Barnaby Manor Elementary, J. Frank Dent Elementary, and Apple Grove Elementary, which all score below 37% in ELA. However, math proficiency is a significant weakness at just 13.3%, slightly below the district average. The school also has a remarkably low chronic absenteeism rate of 10.1%, compared to the district's 30.2% and rates above 40% at nearby schools like Glassmanor Elementary and Forest Heights Elementary. Additionally, only 31.25% of students are eligible for free or reduced-price lunch, a much lower rate than the 85-94% seen at neighboring schools such as Oxon Hill Elementary.

These factors suggest the Montessori method is highly effective for ELA but not for math, and the school attracts a more engaged parent community. Performance varies by grade, with 7th grade ELA at 79.4% but 5th grade math at just 2.7%, indicating areas for improvement. The school also excels with African American students, ranking in the 71st percentile statewide. While spending over $21,000 per student is high, it is less than some nearby schools with worse outcomes, showing that resources are used effectively within the Montessori framework.

Open Quote My child attended the preK 3 program. My child had some difficulties adjusting to the teachers at the school and my child had an incident occur where my daughter destroyed the classroom. The teachers and administrators had no problem showing me pictures of what my child had done, but FAILED TO MENTION THAT MY CHILD WAS LEFT ALONE IN THE CLASSROOM WHEN THIS HAPPENED!!!!! Shortly after the incident occured my child told me that her teachers put her in the "thinking chair" and left the classroom with the other students. I felt terrible because the teachers made me feel like my child was a tyrant when in fact they left my child ALONE!!! After the incident I withdrew my child from the program. Even though my child was not a model 4 yr old student, my child did not deserve to be left alone in a classroom. Close Quote
