Summary

Fort Washington Forest Elementary is a mid-sized school in Fort Washington, MD, serving 323 students from Pre-K through 5th grade within the Prince George's County Public Schools district, where about 60% of students qualify for Free and Reduced Lunch.

The school’s standout strength is its English Language Arts (ELA) performance, with a 40.7% proficiency rate that surpasses the district average of 38.9% and outpaces many nearby schools like Tayac Elementary (16.7%) and Clinton Grove Elementary (29.0%). In 4th grade, ELA scores reached 48.8%, exceeding both district and state averages. However, math proficiency is critically low at just 11.5%, creating a 29.2 percentage point gap between subjects—the largest disparity among nearby schools. This math challenge is widespread across Prince George’s County, where no nearby elementary school exceeds 21.7% math proficiency. The school also shows relatively lower chronic absenteeism (31.9%) compared to peers like Oxon Hill Elementary (34.7%) and Tayac Elementary (37.5%).

Notably, the school spends $21,384 per student—higher than the high-performing Accokeek Academy ($17,059) and Charles County Public Schools like William A. Diggs Elementary (~$15,600), yet outcomes vary widely. The school has shown a positive trajectory over the past decade, climbing from a 1-star rating to a consistent 2-star rating, and it ranks in the 70th percentile statewide for African American students and 71st percentile for Hispanic students—a sign of effective support for these groups. The key takeaway for parents is that Fort Washington Forest excels in reading but faces a significant math crisis, which is a district-wide issue. Its proximity to Accokeek Academy (1.5 miles away) highlights how school performance can vary dramatically within a small area, making it essential to consider both the school’s strengths and the broader district challenges when evaluating options.

Open Quote First, let me state that I am not a teacher or administrator of this school or any school. I am the parent of a 2nd grade student and I am proud that my son attends Fort Washington Forest. The primary issue with this school (as with many schools) is lack of parental involvement. Often, parents send their children to school and expect strangers to do what they refuse to do at home! Studies have shown that students who's parents are actively involved in the educational process excel above those students who's parents are not involved. If your child's test scores aren't high then first look to yourself as a parent and then look to the school . The administration is very customer focused from Ms. Brown in the front office to Mr. Bloyce the principal and all the teachers in between. If you plan to send your child to this school do so with the intent to make both the school and your child better by being involved. Close Quote
