Summary

Greenbelt Elementary is a public elementary school in Greenbelt, Maryland, serving 543 students in grades PK-5. The school is part of the Prince George's County Public Schools district, which is ranked 22 out of 25 in Maryland and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Greenbelt Elementary consistently outperforms the district average in both Mathematics and English Language Arts (ELA) across all grade levels. In the 2024-2025 school year, the school's proficiency rates in Mathematics (20.8%) and ELA (41.2%) were higher than the district (13.1% and 38.3%, respectively) and state (26.5% and 50.8%, respectively) averages. However, the school's Mathematics proficiency rates are still below the state average, indicating room for improvement in this subject area. Greenbelt Elementary has also experienced relatively high chronic absenteeism rates, ranging from 29.9% to 35.6% over the past few years, which is significantly higher than the state's average.

Interestingly, nearby public magnet schools like Phyllis E. Williams Elementary and Robert Goddard Montessori significantly outperform Greenbelt Elementary in both Mathematics and ELA proficiency rates, suggesting the magnet school model may be more effective in improving student outcomes within the district. Additionally, Greenbelt Elementary has seen a steady increase in per-student spending and a decrease in student-teacher ratio, but these investments have not yet translated into significant academic gains, indicating that factors beyond funding and staffing may be contributing to the school's challenges.

Open Quote The school overall has extremely poor communication with parents! School buses constantly over 30 minutes picking children up and I'm not only referencing the beginning of the school year and speak of being late up until today. No call or text about the late bus. Parents are expected to call the school who then forwards you to follow up with the bus lot. Glad this will be my child's last year at this school! Close Quote

Open Quote We have been researching this school as we consider options for our 3 year old. Based on recent and very positive reviews of several neighbors and friends with kids at GES, it appears this school has really improved the past few years. The test 2014 scores (well above the state average and on par with many of the better school districts) back this up. In addition to the better scores, they have added more arts and music classes, and parental involvement is quite strong. Close Quote
