Summary

Bayard Rustin Elementary in Rockville, MD, is a mid-sized school serving 757 students from Pre-K through 5th grade as part of the highly-regarded Montgomery County Public Schools district, and it stands out for its exceptional mathematics performance and its ability to achieve strong academic results with a diverse student body.

One of the most striking features of Bayard Rustin is its remarkable strength in math. In the 2025-2026 school year, 51.5% of its students were proficient in math, which is 14.6 percentage points higher than the district average and nearly double the state average. This "math magnet" effect sets it apart from nearby high-performing schools like Beverly Farms Elementary and Ritchie Park Elementary, where math scores are more in line with reading scores. The school also excels at serving its multi-racial students, ranking in the 85th percentile statewide for this group. However, its science scores, while above district and state averages, are not as dominant as its math scores, suggesting an area for potential growth.

Bayard Rustin serves a more economically diverse population than its highest-performing neighbors, with over 41% of students qualifying for free and reduced lunch. This is significantly higher than schools like Beverly Farms (8.6%) and Fallsmead Elementary (19.0%), yet the school still achieves strong results. A persistent challenge is chronic absenteeism, which has hovered between 16% and 21% over the last four years—better than the district average but higher than top-performing nearby schools. Interestingly, Maryvale Elementary, located just 1.5 miles away with a similar socioeconomic profile, outperforms Bayard Rustin in both math and reading, making it a valuable peer for comparison and potential learning.

Open Quote An amazing place to send your kids. From the Principal (Who is so onvolved and knows every student by name) to the teachers and staff. I m so grateful we have this school and community. Also teachers are very helpful with all the kids. I have a great experience wirh my children that arrived not knowing how to speak English. After a yesr and a half my daugther ranked for avance English in middle. My son is still struggling but being supported during the entire process. Close Quote
