Summary

Richard Montgomery High in Rockville, MD, is a large comprehensive high school serving 2,366 students in grades 9-12 as part of the Montgomery County Public Schools district, which ranks among the top districts in Maryland.

Richard Montgomery presents a striking paradox for parents to consider. The school excels in English Language Arts (ELA), with 73.5% of students proficient—far outpacing the district average of 58.5% and the state average of 51.7%. However, its math proficiency is alarmingly low at just 4.3%, which is the lowest among all standard comprehensive high schools in its immediate area and well below the district average of 36.9%. This is especially notable when compared to nearby Winston Churchill High and Thomas S. Wootton High, which rank among the top 15 schools in the state and have much higher math scores. Even Rockville High, which serves a higher percentage of students from lower-income families, outperforms Richard Montgomery in math (6.5% proficiency). This suggests the math challenge is not simply about student demographics but likely relates to curriculum or instructional approaches.

On the positive side, Richard Montgomery has historically maintained a strong graduation rate above 93%, though it recently dropped to 90.6%, still above the district average of 88.7%. The school also serves a moderately diverse middle-class community, with about 29% of students eligible for free or reduced-price lunch—a rate that places it between the wealthier top-tier schools and those facing greater economic challenges. However, chronic absenteeism has spiked to 26.6%, higher than the district average of 22.6% and significantly above neighbors like Winston Churchill (14.3%). For parents, Richard Montgomery offers strong literacy instruction and a solid overall reputation, but the math proficiency crisis and rising absenteeism are critical areas to investigate further.

Open Quote Military Mom here. Overall the school teaching methods are first rate. However, if you have an individual concern the common theme is "WE have 2000 students here" and are unable to help you or your student. Math teacher upset summer homework was not completed by my son when we just arrived 2 weeks prior to school beginning from overseas. Math policy was vague concerning calculators and teacher faulted my son. Husband and I got involved with admin even school board. Outcome Math policy changed following year and my son got a C in class. He was a straight A student before and after this teacher. Bottom line no compassion. Quality education by mostly Master degreed teachers, but no positive thoughts about your kid here only emphasize taking AP classes so they can up their rating. If your kid has a problem with a teacher, personality clash, get involved with guidance counselor and move them out of the class. My easy going son thought he could handle but teacher was ruthless entire semester. Good news she did not ruin his academic scholarship to college of his choice. Close Quote
