Summary

Aberdeen Middle in Aberdeen, MD, serves 1,071 students in grades 6-8 and is part of the Harford County Public Schools district, a community with a high percentage of students from low socio-economic backgrounds.

Aberdeen Middle has a 2-star rating and ranks in the 44th percentile statewide, which is below the district average and many nearby schools. The most significant challenge is math proficiency, with only 9.1% of students meeting standards in 2025-2026—far lower than the district average of 28.4% and top-performing peers like Fallston Middle (41.8%) and Bel Air Middle (35.7%). Chronic absenteeism is also a major issue, with 27.4% of students chronically absent, nearly double the rates at Patterson Mill Middle (10.3%) and Fallston Middle (12.0%). Over 61% of students qualify for free or reduced lunch, a much higher rate than at higher-performing schools like Fallston Middle (12.08%) and Bel Air Middle (24.07%).

Despite these challenges, there are some positive signs. English Language Arts (ELA) proficiency is a relative strength at 47.5%, closer to the state average of 51.7% and much higher than the school’s own math scores. The school’s statewide ranking has also improved from the 18th percentile in 2021-2022 to the 44th percentile in 2025-2026, suggesting recent interventions may be helping. A notable comparison is with Havre de Grace Middle, just 3.9 miles away, which ranks higher (51st percentile) with lower chronic absenteeism (23.6%) and fewer economically disadvantaged students (46.03%). This shows that while Aberdeen Middle faces significant hurdles, it has a realistic benchmark for improvement. The school also spends a relatively high $18,715 per student, more than top-performing peers like Fallston Middle ($14,427), indicating that resources are available but must be effectively targeted to overcome attendance and socio-economic barriers.

Open Quote The faculty doesn't seem to care how well the kids do and will drop down to their (kids) level with snide remarks and comments which I believe to be totally unprofessional. I also dealt with a situation where we called to the school to discuss our child and one of the Asst. Principal's apparently had the discussion in open forum at the front office desk instead of returning to her office and possibly closing the door so other children could not hear the conversation. By the time my child returned to school the next day, other children were already aware of the conversation and my child was picked on. Close Quote
