Summary

Hampstead Hill Academy is a public PK-8 school in Baltimore, MD, serving 933 students in the Patterson Park neighborhood as part of the Baltimore City Public Schools district. This school stands out as a high-performing academic beacon in a district that ranks near the bottom of the state, consistently earning a 4-star rating from SchoolDigger over the last five years and ranking in the 70th-81st percentile statewide.

The most striking difference between Hampstead Hill Academy and its neighbors is academic performance. In the 2025-2026 school year, the school achieved a 50% proficiency rate in Math and a 65.6% proficiency rate in English Language Arts (ELA). This is dramatically higher than the district averages of 13.3% in Math and 32.9% in ELA. For comparison, the nearest school, Highlandtown Elementary/Middle #237, posted just 5.4% Math and 16% ELA proficiency—meaning Hampstead Hill's scores are roughly 9 times higher in Math and 4 times higher in ELA. Even the next best nearby school, Patterson Park Public Charter School, trails significantly with 19.1% Math and 41.4% ELA proficiency. The school also excels in advanced coursework, with 79.4% of students proficient in Algebra I compared to just 13.8% district-wide.

Another key differentiator is the school's remarkably low chronic absenteeism rate of 9.7%, compared to the district average of 46.4%. This is drastically lower than nearby schools like Tench Tilghman Elementary/Middle (58.0%) and City Springs Elementary/Middle (58.4%), indicating a highly engaged student body and positive school culture. Interestingly, Hampstead Hill achieves these results while spending $21,452 per student—less than many lower-performing neighbors such as William Paca Elementary ($28,167) and Wolfe Street Academy ($30,454). This suggests the school's success comes from effective instruction and strong leadership rather than higher spending, making it a true community anchor and a clear "school of choice" for families in the area.

Open Quote This is simply an amazing school. Despite the challenges of extreme diversity, socioeconomic disparity, and city living, this school THRIVES. It completely changed our mind about leaving Baltimore for our kids. We love it. The staff are amazing, teachers are engaged, students have a love of learning, so many activities every week, engaged parents. It truly is a gem, one of the best schools in the state.
