Somerville High is a large public comprehensive high school in Somerville, Massachusetts, a city bordering Boston, serving grades 9–12 with 1,394 students. It is the main high school in the Somerville district, which ranks 198th of 351 districts statewide (44th percentile, 2 stars), but the school itself has climbed steadily: its 2025–26 rank is 146th of 353 schools (59th percentile, 3 stars), up from 265th of 351 (25th percentile, 1 star) in 2015–16. It now outperforms its own district.
Compared with nearby schools, Somerville High is a solid mid-to-upper option. Its 89.8% graduation rate and 6.9% dropout rate beat the district (86.1% and 9.6%) and surpass Chelsea High (78.2%, 15.5%), Charlestown High School (74.5%, 10.8%) and Snowden International High School, though they trail Cambridge Rindge and Latin (94.2%, 1.9%), Community Charter School of Cambridge (92.5%, 2.5%) and Boston Arts Academy (93.9%, 3.5%). In 2025–26 10th-grade MCAS, Somerville scored above its district in every core subject, exceeded the state in science (43.25%) and biology (42.45%), and came close in English language arts (44.65%), while math (40.65%) remains about 3 points below the state — a gap that has narrowed from roughly 9 points. Cambridge Rindge and Latin remains far ahead in math.
Two areas are worth watching. Achievement varies across student groups: students from low-income families rank at the 29th percentile and English language learners at the 38th percentile, a large improvement from the 3rd percentile in 2023–24. The school spent $22,926 per pupil in 2020–21 — less than Cambridge and several nearby Boston-area schools — and its student–teacher ratio has risen from 9.8 to 11.1. Note that Full Circle High School, at the same address, is a tiny alternative program of 67 students with very different outcomes and is not a direct comparison.
