Summary

Ferryway is a large K–8 neighborhood school at 150 Cross Street in Malden, MA, serving 920 students in the Malden district near the Everett line. It has been stable and mid-pack for a decade: 2 stars every reported year, with statewide percentile ranks between 32nd and 43rd and 38th in 2025-26. It is near the state average in ELA, science, and civics, but lags in math, and it outperforms its district in every tested subject.

Within Malden, Ferryway is the third-strongest of the district’s five K–8 schools. Its three-subject average (38.7) trails Forestdale (40.5) and Beebe (41.1), but is ahead of Linden (36.8) and far ahead of Salemwood (24.6). Across the border, however, Ferryway is decisively stronger than nearby Everett schools: Webster School, Sumner G. Whittier School, Lafayette School, George Keverian School, Madeline English School, and Parlin School all score below it in ELA, math, and science. Ferryway’s ELA proficiency is more than double that of Parlin School and Madeline English School, and its science score is roughly 2.7 times Parlin School’s. It also has the lowest per-pupil spending among Malden’s K–8 schools ($15,253) and the second-best student-teacher ratio (13.4).

Two patterns matter most. First, Ferryway’s subject profile is lopsided: in 2025-26, ELA was 41.87 versus the state’s 40.03 and civics was above state, but math was 34.43 versus the state’s 41.11. Second, performance climbs with grade level: seventh- and eighth-grade ELA (52.13 and 51.58) are well above state, while third-grade ELA (28.87) and math (26.8) are far below. Early-grade literacy and math are the clearest areas to watch. Encouragingly, English learners and low-income students rank at the 69th and 68th percentiles—well above the school’s overall 38th percentile—and special education results have improved from the 9th to the 24th percentile, though still below average. Overall, Ferryway is a stable, slowly improving school that is especially strong in the upper grades and for several higher-need groups, with math and early grades as its main weaknesses.
