Summary

Forestdale is a K–8 school with 539 students at 74 Sylvan Street in Malden, Massachusetts — the smallest of the city's five K–8 schools. It is currently the strongest-performing Malden K–8 school in its comparison group and is in the middle of a sustained climb: in 2025–2026 it ranked 379th of 899 schools statewide (58th percentile, 3 stars), its first three-star rating in ten years of history, up from the 28th percentile and 1 star in 2018–2019. It clears the state average in ELA (42.37% vs. 40.03%) and science (41.88% vs. 40.98%), and beats its own Malden district in all three subjects — a distinction worth noting, since the district itself ranks 225th of 351 statewide.

Among Malden peers, Forestdale leads the K–8 group by statewide rank, ahead of Beebe (44th percentile), Linden (39), Ferryway (38) and Salemwood (30). It also has the lowest student–teacher ratio of any nearby school — 10.4, improved from 11.7 — and the highest per-pupil spending among its Malden peers at $17,913. The uncomfortable comparison is across the town line: Herbert Clark Hoover in Melrose, about two-thirds of a mile away, spends roughly $5,100 less per student yet posts higher proficiency, and Melrose schools generally land in the 84th–99th statewide percentiles.

The most actionable finding is a "strong start, weak finish" pattern. Third grade is excellent (55.56% ELA, 57.78% math), but proficiency slides steadily through the grades; by 8th grade the school trails the state in every subject, and 8th-grade math (26.42%) is the low point of the dataset. Math overall is the one subject below the state, and special education students and male students remain the persistent soft spots. Note too that free/reduced-price lunch data is unavailable for this school because the state suppresses it, and some subgroup results swing widely from year to year.
