Summary

Peabody is an elementary school located in Cambridge, MA that serves 321 students from pre-kindergarten to 5th grade. The school consistently performs above the state average on MCAS Next Generation assessments, with particularly strong results in 5th grade English Language Arts, 3rd grade ELA, and 4th grade Math.

Peabody's academic performance is a standout, with proficiency rates of 57.94% in ELA, 54.4% in Math, and 77.27% in Science, compared to state averages of 41.53%, 40.74%, and 41.51% respectively. The school's White and African American students, as well as its Special Education students, consistently outperform their peers statewide. However, the school's low-income students lag behind, suggesting a need for targeted interventions to ensure equitable outcomes.

While Peabody's performance is generally stronger than nearby schools in the Somerville district, the nearby Benjamin Banneker Charter Public School outperforms Peabody across all academic subjects and grade levels. By addressing the achievement gap for low-income students and learning from the success of high-performing schools in the area, Peabody has the potential to further strengthen its educational outcomes and provide an exceptional learning experience for all its students.

Open Quote Our child had a very hard time at Peabody. Despite thriving in Pre-school, she deteriorated greatly once enrolled in Peabody. We saw reversion in learning, lack of friends, anxiety, and tantrums to avoid school. Her teacher implemented yelling and blowing a whistle to control unruly children. Many meetings with teachers and principal failed to help and we ultimately changed schools. We know at least one other family in our classroom that also changed schools and several others who were unhappy. A poor teacher can happen anywhere, but an unresponsive approach by a principal is where we drew the line. Our child is back to thriving again, loving school, and learning in leaps and bounds after changing to a different Cambridge public school. Close Quote
