Summary

Walter Schneckenburger Elementary School in Kenner, LA, serves 327 students in grades PK-5 within the Jefferson Parish school district. This school has historically been a solid performer, but recent data shows a significant decline, dropping to the 24th percentile statewide—its lowest rank in years. This downturn is a key concern for parents, especially when compared to nearby schools like Harold Keller Elementary School, which has remained more stable during the same period.

One of the most notable findings is a growing gender performance gap, with female students ranking in the 39th percentile while male students fell to the 17th percentile. This is the largest such gap among nearby schools. However, the school excels in supporting Special Education students, who rank in the 83rd percentile statewide—a standout achievement. In contrast, students from low socio-economic backgrounds are struggling, ranking in the 25th percentile, suggesting that support systems may not be reaching all groups equally. Additionally, chronic absenteeism has more than doubled from 8.3% to 17.3% in recent years, directly correlating with the drop in test scores.

Despite these challenges, there are bright spots. Fifth-grade Social Studies is a notable exception, with 61% of students proficient—11 points above the district average. Historically, math was a strength, with 70% proficiency in 2022-2023, but that has since dropped to 50%, below both district and state averages. Compared to its closest neighbor, Tom Benson School, which ranks in the 11th percentile, Schneckenburger still outperforms in most academic metrics, though both schools face challenges with absenteeism. For parents, this school offers strong support for Special Education students and a standout Social Studies program, but addressing the decline in math and overall engagement will be critical moving forward.

Open Quote The state doesn't fund this school and it's literally falling apart. The school system in this area is broken. The teachers and the principal lack the concern, compassion and care, which make them the real bullies of the school system. Miserable staff and faculty. A few years ago a child died here because of neglect and now I can see why. Close Quote
