Summary

Harold Keller Elementary School is a PK-5 public school in Metairie, LA, serving 550 students within the Jefferson Parish school district, where 64% of students come from low socio-economic backgrounds. This school stands out for its exceptional math performance, with 62% of students proficient in math—matching the state average and surpassing the district average by 8 points—while its 4th and 5th graders achieve notably higher scores than both district and state peers. In contrast, English Language Arts (ELA) remains a persistent weakness, with only 62% proficiency, which is 8 points below the state average, highlighting a clear area for growth.

Harold Keller has shown remarkable progress for specific student groups, particularly African American students, whose statewide ranking jumped from the 29th percentile to the 78th percentile in just two years. The school also excels at supporting Special Education and English Language Learner students, ranking in the 66th and 57th percentiles respectively, outperforming its overall 42nd percentile ranking. However, the school struggles with its White student population, which ranks in the 17th percentile, indicating a need for targeted improvement. Chronic absenteeism has improved significantly, dropping to 18.4% in 2024-2025, now lower than both district and state averages, reflecting effective engagement efforts.

Compared to nearby schools, Harold Keller is a solid, middle-of-the-pack option with a unique academic profile. It significantly outperforms Tom Benson School (11th percentile) and Greenlawn Terrace Elementary School (21st percentile) in nearly every metric, and is comparable to Alice Birney Elementary School and John Clancy/Joseph Maggiore Elementary School, but with a distinct advantage in math. The outlier in the area is Airline Park Academy for Advanced Studies, a magnet-style school with a 5-star rating and very low chronic absenteeism, which operates in a different performance tier. Harold Keller’s strength lies in being a strong, inclusive neighborhood school that is demonstrably improving support for diverse learners while working to address its ELA challenges.

Open Quote I attended Harold Keller Elementary School from my Kindergarten through 5th Grade year. I was head of my class every year, culminating in being named Student Of The Year for the 2005-2006 school year. While attending, I made close connections with all my teachers, who instilled in me a knowledge that is invaluable. I learned not only how to read, add, multiply, and divide, but also how to operate in society. The school's administration and staff was top notch during my time as a student, and I'm sure it still is. This is a great school for any child. Close Quote
