Summary

Tom Benson School in Kenner, LA, is a public PK-8 school serving 631 students within the Jefferson Parish school district, and it has historically ranked in the bottom 10-15% of elementary schools statewide, though it has shown slight improvement in recent years.

One of the most significant challenges at Tom Benson is chronic absenteeism, which at 28.2% is the highest among all nearby schools and far exceeds the district average of 21.5%. For comparison, nearby schools like Bissonet Plaza School (17.7%) and A.C. Alexander School (13.1%) have much lower rates. This directly impacts learning, as teachers cannot effectively instruct students who are not in class. The school also has a notably high dropout rate of 4.1% for a PK-8 school, which is higher than Chateau Estates School (1.9%) and Bissonet Plaza School (0.7%), suggesting significant student disengagement. While the student-teacher ratio of 13.2:1 is comparable to neighboring schools, academic outcomes remain far worse, indicating that the issue is not a lack of staff but rather the effectiveness of instruction and the learning environment.

Despite these struggles, Tom Benson has a remarkable strength: it ranks in the 50th percentile statewide for English Language Learner (ELL) student performance, earning a 3-star rating. This is a stark contrast to its overall ranking (11th percentile) and its performance with other subgroups, such as Low Socio-Economic Status students (8th percentile). This suggests the school has developed effective programs for its ELL population that could be expanded to help other struggling groups. However, the school’s test scores show a dramatic drop-off as students progress through grades—for example, math proficiency falls from 44% in 3rd and 4th grade to just 19% in 8th grade—pointing to potential issues with curriculum alignment or teacher retention in the middle school years. Overall, Tom Benson is consistently the lowest-performing school in its immediate vicinity, with nearby schools like A.C. Alexander School and Harold Keller Elementary School achieving significantly higher proficiency rates in math and English Language Arts.
