Summary

Young Audiences Charter School in Gretna, LA, serves 1,077 students from Pre-K through 8th grade within the Jefferson Parish school district, where nearly 90% of students qualify for free or reduced lunch. While the school's overall academic performance ranks in the bottom third of Louisiana elementary schools, it shows remarkable strengths in specific areas that set it apart from nearby schools.

One of the school's most impressive achievements is its performance on high school-level End-of-Course exams, where 100% of students taking English I and 92% taking Algebra I scored proficient or better—far exceeding district and state averages. This suggests the school excels at preparing its top students for advanced coursework. Additionally, Young Audiences has developed a notably effective program for English Language Learners, ranking in the 47th percentile for this subgroup, a dramatic improvement from the previous year. The school also boasts a low chronic absenteeism rate of just 9.8%, significantly better than nearby McDonogh 26/Homedale Elementary School (29.9%) and Terrytown Elementary School (20.2%).

However, the school faces challenges. Its overall performance has declined sharply over the past two years, dropping from the 30th percentile to the 14th percentile. While upper-grade English Language Arts proficiency (69% in 6th grade) surpasses the district average, early literacy and math scores lag behind. The contrast with nearby Ruppel Academie Francaise—a top-performing school with a lower poverty rate—highlights significant achievement gaps tied to socioeconomic factors. Parents should consider Young Audiences for its strong advanced programs and supportive environment for English learners, while being aware of the school's overall academic struggles and recent decline.
