Summary:

The New Orleans school system is a unique, all-charter district serving 74 schools from Pre-K through 12th grade, creating a highly stratified landscape where a handful of elite schools achieve exceptional results while many others struggle with the challenges of high poverty.

For parents, the standout schools are clear. Benjamin Franklin High School and The Willow School are the city's academic powerhouses, with near-perfect test scores, extremely low chronic absenteeism (around 5% or less), and dropout rates below 1%. Lake Forest Elementary Charter School is another top performer, achieving remarkable results despite serving a student body where over 72% qualify for free or reduced lunch. On the other end, schools like Dr. Martin Luther King Charter School for Sci Technical and Travis Hill School face immense challenges, with 100% and 97% poverty rates respectively, leading to the lowest test scores and highest dropout rates in the city. The Noble Minds district school is also among the lowest-performing, ranking in the 1st percentile statewide.

A critical insight is that chronic absenteeism is a powerful warning sign. Schools like McDonogh 35 Senior High School (70.4% absenteeism) and Warren Easton Charter High School (50.8%) are consistently among the lowest-performing, while top schools all have rates below 10%. The "Alternative" school label is also misleading: The Willow School is classified as alternative but is the city's best, while Travis Hill School serves a very different, at-risk population. Finally, the KIPP Ernest N. Dutch Morial network serves a highly disadvantaged population (over 83% poverty), but their test score data is largely missing, making it difficult to compare their performance to other schools serving similar demographics.
