Summary

Turner Elementary Middle School in Shreveport, LA, serves 1,437 students from Pre-K through 8th grade within the Caddo Parish school district, where over 80% of students come from low-socioeconomic backgrounds. The school faces significant academic challenges, consistently ranking in the bottom 10% of elementary schools statewide over the past decade, with a current state rank of 659 out of 690 (4th percentile) for the 2025-2026 school year. This performance is notably lower than nearby schools like Walnut Hill Elementary/Middle School (44th percentile) and Judson Fundamental Elementary School (42nd percentile), and is more comparable to other struggling schools such as Bethune/Oak Park Elementary (5th percentile) and Westwood Elementary (9th percentile).

A critical issue at Turner is its alarmingly high chronic absenteeism rate of 36.4% in the 2024-2025 school year, which far exceeds the state average of 22.5% and is significantly higher than nearby schools with similar demographics, such as Walnut Hill (22.3%), Forest Hill Elementary School (23.4%), and Summerfield Elementary School (23.2%). Only Queensborough Elementary School (35.7%) and Southern Hills Elementary School (36.2%) have comparable rates. This attendance crisis is likely a primary driver of low academic outcomes, as evidenced by the stark contrast with Walnut Hill, which has a lower poverty rate (67.9% vs. 82.3%) and better student-teacher ratio (15.1 vs. 17.5), but the most significant difference is its much lower absenteeism (22.3% vs. 36.4%).

Despite these challenges, Turner shows a remarkable bright spot: it ranks in the 67th percentile statewide for English Language Learner (ELL) students, earning a 3-star rating in the 2024-2025 school year, indicating effective programs for this subgroup. However, this success is not evenly distributed, as the school ranks in the 1st percentile for Special Education students, the lowest possible tier, highlighting a critical area of need. The school is on a clear downward trajectory, with its state percentile rank dropping from 20th in 2017-2018 to just 4th in 2025-2026, suggesting that current interventions are not working and a fundamental change in strategy is required to address the attendance crisis and replicate the success seen with ELL students for other subgroups.

Open Quote The staff at Turner Elementary does not take complaints about bullying serious and will blame those that are bullied. The quality of education is definitely not what I expect out of any school anywhere in the United States. The faculty of this school think they are better than anyone else. This school needs an entire restructuring of it's faculty to increase the quality of education and the school rating. Close Quote
