Summary

Walnut Hill Elementary/Middle School in Shreveport, LA, is a large public school serving 1,480 students in grades PK-8 within the Caddo Parish district, where about 68% of students come from low-income backgrounds.

Walnut Hill stands out as a clear academic leader in its area, outperforming all nearby schools in nearly every subject. For example, in math, 58% of Walnut Hill students are proficient, compared to the district average of 51% and the next closest school, Forest Hill Elementary School, at 52%. In English Language Arts, Walnut Hill’s 68% proficiency rate tops the district’s 60% and Forest Hill’s 58%. The school also excels in social studies (56% proficient vs. district 43%) and boasts a remarkable 100% proficiency rate on the Algebra I End-of-Course exam for two years running—far above the district (56%) and state (65%) averages. This makes Walnut Hill a beacon of success in a district that ranks in the bottom 26% of Louisiana, with most nearby schools like Keithville Elementary/Middle School and Summerfield Elementary School ranking in the bottom 15% of the state.

However, there are important challenges to note. While the school is strong overall, performance drops significantly as students move into middle school—math proficiency falls from 66% in 5th grade to 42% in 8th grade, and English Language Arts declines from 78% in 6th grade to 68% in 8th grade. Chronic absenteeism has also more than doubled from 10% in 2021-2022 to 22.3% in 2024-2025, now matching the state average. Additionally, the school struggles to serve its Special Education students, who rank in the bottom 26% statewide. Despite these issues, Walnut Hill remains a top choice for families in the area, offering strong academics and a standout Algebra I program.

Open Quote If you are in this schools district I would strongly recommend considering a nearby private school. I have had four children attend this school and it used to be great but seems to be on the decline for the last several years. My child recently had a very expensive item stolen due to school negligence and from my understanding this happens quit frequently. The office staff seemed to do the bare minimum, just enough to cover themselves. The administrative member I dealt with seemed unconcerned and was unwilling to pursue the matter. I'm thankful this is my childs last year attending this school. Close Quote

Open Quote Both of my kids go Walnut Hill and have excelled beyond my expectations for their age groups. My youngest is starting first grade this year with more reading and writing abilities than some kids in other schools that are in second and third grades. My oldest is in the fifth grade and while he is struggling slightly with some of his subjects, the teachers have been great in providing him with additional assistance and extra credit work in an effort to make sure he understands the subject matter and not just shuffling through barely passing.

Kudos to the staff at Walnut Hill! It's teachers like you that make lasting impressions on their students and make them want and desire to learn and better themselves.

Please keep up the good work!! Close Quote
