Summary

Westwood Elementary School in Shreveport, LA, serves 419 students from Pre-K through 5th grade within the Caddo Parish school district, where a high percentage of families qualify for free or reduced lunch. While the school has historically ranked in the bottom tier of Louisiana elementary schools, there are some encouraging signs and unique strengths that set it apart from nearby schools.

One standout area is how Westwood supports its Special Education students. In the most recent school year, the school ranked in the 37th percentile for serving this group—a stark contrast to its overall ranking and the highest rating it has achieved for any subgroup. This suggests effective, targeted strategies are in place for these students. Additionally, Westwood boasts a favorable student-teacher ratio of 12:1, which is better than many comparable schools like Caddo Heights Math/Science Elementary School and Southern Hills Elementary School. However, math proficiency has seen a notable decline, dropping from 42% to 29% over the past few years, which is a steeper drop than at nearby schools like Forest Hill Elementary School.

An interesting internal pattern is that 4th-grade students consistently outperform their 3rd and 5th-grade peers in both math and English Language Arts, pointing to a particularly strong teaching team at that grade level. While chronic absenteeism is a challenge across the district, Westwood's rate of 27% is actually better than the district average and lower than many neighbors, such as Atkins Technology Elementary School. The school's recent ranking improvement from the 1st to the 9th percentile offers a glimmer of hope, suggesting that new initiatives may be starting to take hold. For context, the nearby Fairfield Magnet School serves a very different demographic and ranks in the top 1% statewide, highlighting the significant achievement gap that Westwood is working to close.
