Summary

Summerfield Elementary School in Shreveport, LA, serves 428 students from Pre-Kindergarten through 5th grade and is part of the Caddo Parish school district, which ranks in the bottom quarter of districts statewide. The school has a history of low academic performance, currently ranking in the 6th percentile (649th out of 690 schools) for the 2025-2026 school year, and serves a high-poverty population with about 74.5% of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch.

Despite these challenges, Summerfield has a notable bright spot in its 4th-grade students, who achieved 49% proficiency in Math and 59% in ELA—the latter being just 5 points below the district average and the highest of any grade at the school. This pattern suggests a potential strength in the 4th-grade teaching team or a specific intervention program that could be replicated school-wide. Additionally, the school’s chronic absenteeism rate of 23.2% is lower than many nearby schools, such as Atkins Technology Elementary (49.1%) and Eighty-First Street ECE Center (55.3%), indicating that attendance is a relative strength. The student-teacher ratio of 12.1 is also favorable compared to higher-performing schools like Walnut Hill Elementary/Middle School (15.1) and Forest Hill Elementary School (13.6), though this has not yet translated into higher test scores.

Interestingly, Summerfield is not the lowest-performing school in its area—schools like Westwood Elementary and Summer Grove Elementary have even lower overall scores. However, the proximity of much higher-performing schools like Walnut Hill and Forest Hill, which serve similar demographics but achieve nearly double the proficiency rates, suggests that school-specific factors like leadership and instructional quality play a key role. The school’s overall rank has declined from the 24th percentile in 2015-2016 to the 6th percentile in 2025-2026, with the most alarming trend for low-socioeconomic status students, who now rank in the 4th percentile statewide. This indicates that the school is becoming less effective at serving its core demographic, making the 4th-grade success a critical area for investigation and potential improvement.

Open Quote I have some concerns about this School. I made some Christmas Treats for my Grandson's Kindergarten Class and when he did not receive one, his Mother asked if I dropped them off....supposedly...the Teacher took it upon herself to give them only to the "good kids" which very much upsets me because I made them for ALL the Kids! Open Quote I have had three children to attend this school and this year 2014 has been the worst school year for us. I'm currently looking at my options because I don't won't my child to attend this school another year because of the lack leadership skills that the current principal (Skinner) has at this time. I'm not surprised by the ratings this school received. Close Quote
