Summary

Northwood High School in Shreveport, LA, serves 989 students in grades 9-12 within the Caddo Parish school district, where over 54% of students qualify for free or reduced lunch.

Northwood’s most notable strength is its graduation rate, which at 86% consistently exceeds both the district and state averages. This is a significant differentiator from nearby high-poverty schools like Woodlawn High School (70.7%) and Booker T. Washington High (75.9%). However, this positive outcome is threatened by a severe chronic absenteeism crisis that has nearly doubled in recent years to 40.8%, far exceeding the district average of 31% and rates at schools like C.E. Byrd High School (30.7%). Academically, the school shows relative strength in English Language Arts, with proficiency rates near 50%, but struggles significantly in math—Algebra I proficiency (34%) is a staggering 31 points below the state average. This "math gap" is wider than at comparable schools like Huntington High School (38% in Algebra I).

An interesting comparison is with nearby Green Oaks Performing Arts Academy, just 3.75 miles away, which serves an even higher percentage of low-income students yet has shown dramatic academic improvement, outperforming Northwood in Algebra I (58% vs. 34%) and U.S. History (68% vs. 40%). Northwood’s most critical weakness is its performance with special education students, ranking in the bottom 7% statewide. While the student-teacher ratio has improved to 17.5:1, the benefit is undermined by the escalating absenteeism problem. The school’s future success hinges on tackling attendance head-on and learning from the effective strategies implemented at schools like Green Oaks.

Open Quote I found Northwood High School to be an above average school relative to many
of the other schools within that district. However, it left much to be desired
in the areas of cultural enlightenment and diversity awareness. I seem to
remember a distinct seating arrangement during my tenure as a student at
Northwood; one which left me wondering if this was the true face of "integreation" -
that being "separation within integration". All in all, I am glad that I had
an opportunity to experience my time at Northwood High. It certainly gave me
something to talk about as i try so desperately to co-exist with my west coast
colleagues. Liberal is as liberal does... Close Quote
