Summary

Mooringsport Elementary School is a small, rural PK-5 school in Mooringsport, LA, serving 259 students within the Caddo Parish school district, where over 76% of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. While the school has historically ranked in the bottom quartile of Louisiana elementary schools, it recently showed improvement, moving from the 12th to the 21st percentile in the 2025-2026 school year—its highest rank in three years. A standout "bright spot" is the 4th-grade cohort, which achieved proficiency rates exceeding both district and state averages in Mathematics (67%) and English Language Arts (74%), suggesting a specific effective strategy or strong teacher team that could be replicated across other grades.

However, the school faces a severe chronic absenteeism crisis, with 41.4% of students chronically absent in the 2024-2025 school year—nearly double the state average of 22.5% and significantly higher than nearby high-performing schools like Legacy Elementary School (13%) and Benton Elementary School (21%) in the Bossier Parish district. This absenteeism rate is a primary driver of low academic performance, making it difficult for the school to sustain its recent gains without a community-wide intervention. On a positive note, Mooringsport benefits from a favorable student-teacher ratio of 12:1, smaller than Herndon Magnet School (16:1) and Pine Grove Elementary School (13.3:1), offering potential for more individualized attention.

The contrast with nearby Bossier Parish schools like Kingston Elementary School (95th percentile) highlights how socioeconomic factors and district policies shape educational environments. Mooringsport is more comparable to other high-poverty Caddo Parish schools such as J. S. Clark Elementary School and Pine Grove. Despite challenges, the 4th-grade success shows the school's potential, but addressing the absenteeism crisis and replicating effective practices across all grades are critical next steps for sustained improvement.

Open Quote I absolutely LOVE this school, the teachers and the office staff are always professional and are willing to speak with you at anytime. They know you by name and know your child as well. NO child will be left behind in this school. Knowing your child is cared for and is loving school is something that I can say makes sending them away easier and less stressful as a parent and sure as a student. I can not say enough GREAT things about this school. Close Quote
