Summary:

Seven schools serve Letcher County students from elementary through high school: four elementary schools, two middle schools and one high school. In 2025–2026, reported elementary and middle school averages were about 6 percentage points below state results in both math and reading, though performance varied considerably by grade and school. The clearest academic standout is Fleming Neon Middle School: its five reported eighth-grade subject results averaged 66% proficient, compared with 42% across the matched state results.

Fleming Neon led the listed schools in all five eighth-grade subjects, including 68% in reading and 79% in editing and mechanics—28 and 37 points above the state, respectively. Letcher County Central High School also stood out: it exceeded state results by 13 points in writing and 10 in reading, and its graduation rate was 99% versus 94% statewide. At the lower end, West Whitesburg Elementary School was below the state in all its reported third- through fifth-grade math and reading results; fifth-grade math was 21%, compared with 43% statewide. Results at Letcher Elementary & Middle School were mixed, including fourth-grade math 16 points above the state and eighth-grade math 11 points below.

Recent trends also differ by subject and school. Across comparable grades, math averages declined both locally and statewide, with the local results drawing slightly closer; reading averages fell locally while rising statewide, widening the gap from 4 to 6 points. Fleming Neon rose from the 63rd to the 83rd percentile in SchoolDigger’s statewide rankings, while West Whitesburg fell from the 30th to the 9th percentile. All seven schools reported the share eligible for free or reduced-price lunch in 2024–2025; it ranged from 58% at Fleming to 78% at Cowan Elementary School, a measure that provides context but does not explain results. Averages here give each reported school-grade result equal weight rather than weighting by student enrollment.
