Summary

Wilbur Middle School is a public middle school located in Wichita, Kansas, serving grades 6-8 with a total enrollment of 774 students. The school has consistently underperformed compared to the Wichita school district and the state of Kansas in standardized test scores across all subjects and grade levels. For example, in the 2024-2025 school year, only 30.12% of Wilbur students were proficient or better in English Language Arts, compared to 28.89% in Wichita and 44.47% statewide. In mathematics, only 25.53% of Wilbur students were proficient or better, compared to 18.62% in Wichita and 38.73% statewide.

Wilbur Middle School's performance is particularly concerning for certain student subgroups. In the 2024-2025 school year, only 40% of African American students, 84% of Hispanic students, and 57% of multi-racial students were ranked in the top half of Wilbur Middle School in English Language Arts. The school also struggles with its special education and low socioeconomic status student populations, ranking in the bottom half of Kansas middle schools. Additionally, Wilbur Middle School has significantly higher chronic absenteeism rates and dropout rates compared to the Wichita district averages.

When comparing Wilbur Middle School to other nearby middle schools in the Wichita district, it becomes clear that Wilbur is one of the lowest-performing schools. For example, Allison Traditional Magnet Middle School, which is only 4.88 miles away, consistently outperforms Wilbur in academic achievement. The school's higher percentage of students from low-socioeconomic backgrounds suggests that targeted interventions and additional resources may be necessary to address the underlying issues and improve student outcomes.
