Summary:
Cheney has three public schools serving prekindergarten through grade 12: Cheney Elementary (395 students), Cheney Middle School (193 students), and Cheney High (235 students). The strongest shared finding is that every school is above the state result in all three supplied subjects: even the lowest school score, High’s 53% in science, is 14 percentage points above the state’s 38%.
The schools have different subject strengths. Elementary leads ELA at 71%, ahead of Middle by 7 points and High by 7 points; High leads mathematics at 69%, 5 points above Middle and 6 above Elementary. Middle narrowly leads science at 64%, just 0.1 point ahead of Elementary; High is lowest at 53%, 12 points behind Middle, but still above the state. SchoolDigger’s rankings also place all three high statewide: High is 11th of 340 schools (97th percentile), Middle 20th of 368 (95th percentile), and Elementary 57th of 657 (91st percentile).
Recent results show ELA improving at all three schools from 2024–2025 to 2025–2026: gains were 1 point at Elementary, 1 at Middle, and 3 at High. Mathematics rose 1 point at Elementary but fell 6 at Middle and 7 at High; the three-school average declined 4 points while the state result rose 2. In science, the comparable results fell 5 points at Elementary and 14 at Middle; a prior-year High result is not supplied. Other measures may help families compare schools, but do not explain test results: student-teacher ratios range from 9.6 at High to 14.8 at Elementary, and free/reduced-lunch rates range from 21% at High to 34% at Elementary. High also has the highest chronic absenteeism, at 20%, compared with 13% at Middle and 4% at Elementary.
