Woodland Elementary School

Summary:

Woodland Elementary School is a public elementary school serving grades PK-6 in Elkhart, Indiana, with a student population of 438. The school is part of the Elkhart Community Schools district, which is ranked 303 out of 381 districts in the state and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Woodland Elementary faces significant challenges, including very high chronic absenteeism rates, consistently underperforming the district and state on academic assessments, and a high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch. For example, in the 2023-2024 school year, only 16.39% of Woodland students were proficient or better in ELA, compared to 22.15% for the district and 38.6-41.8% statewide. In math, the proficiency rate was 17.55% at Woodland, compared to 22.47% for the district and 38.1-52.4% statewide. Additionally, Woodland spends between $8,498 and $9,754 per student, which is lower than the district average.

When comparing Woodland Elementary to other nearby schools in the Elkhart Community Schools district, it becomes clear that Woodland is one of the lowest-performing schools. For example, Beardsley Elementary and Mary Daly Elementary have even lower academic proficiency rates and higher chronic absenteeism than Woodland. However, the data suggests that there is room for improvement, and addressing the underlying issues of chronic absenteeism, economic disadvantage, and lower per-student spending could be key to boosting student achievement at Woodland Elementary.

Open Quote This is a great school, the principle Mr Payne is always willing to listen. This principle has made a big turnaround with the teachers the students and parents. The staff at Woodland work to keep the kids in a safe, and the learning environment positive.
There is constant change to keep the kids interest. Parent participation is high and always welcome.

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
