West Side Middle School is a grades 6–8 school in Elkhart, Indiana, serving 569 students as part of Elkhart Community Schools, a district ranked 317th of 374 in Indiana. Statewide, the school placed 354th of 486 (27th percentile) in 2025–2026 with 1 star, down from 333rd of 480 in 2024–2025 and 297th of 491 in 2023–2024. That continues a longer slide: West Side sat near the state median in 2015–2016 (47th percentile) and 2016–2017 (45th percentile). In 2025–2026, all-grade proficiency was 25.84% in ELA, 22.4% in math, and 16.41% in science.

Within its own district, West Side is the strongest of the Elkhart middle schools compared here, beating North Side Middle School and Pierre Moran Middle School in ELA, math, and science while spending less per student ($11,608) and having lower free/reduced lunch rates (55.01%). It also has lower chronic absenteeism than North Side (26.2% vs 32.6%). But nearby schools outside the district show how large the gap is: North Wood Middle School, Virgil I Grissom Middle School, Concord Junior High School, and Discovery Middle School all post much higher proficiency.
