Summary

Hammond Academy of Science & Technical is a public school in Hammond, IN, serving grades 6–12 with 578 students as its own district, and it is one of the few schools in the area that also covers middle school grades. Its recent history is a genuine turnaround: after finishing in the bottom quarter of Indiana schools in 2022–23, it climbed into the top third in 2023–24 and reached 123rd of 415 schools (70th percentile, 4 stars) in 2025–26.

Outcomes for older students are strong, especially given the population served. The 2024–25 graduation rate was 98.4%, versus 89.7% statewide — essentially tied with Munster High School for the best among nearby traditional high schools, and far above Hammond Central High School (80.4%), Morton Senior High School (76.0%), and West Side Leadership Academy (58.6%). Biology end-of-course results (59.38%) were second only to Munster, and SAT reading (52.17%) edged above the state average of 51.9%. Chronic absenteeism (20.1%) is above the state rate but well below Hammond Central, Morton, East Chicago Central High School, and West Side. About 68% of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, yet spending is $10,892 per student — less than most neighbors — and the student-teacher ratio of 12.2 is the lowest nearby.

Math is the clearest weak spot. SAT math was 20.29%, below the state's 25.6%, and middle-school ILEARN math trailed state averages in grades 6, 7, and 8 — so those middle-grade results should not be compared directly with the high-school scores of neighboring 9–12 schools. Absenteeism also bears watching: it fell to an excellent 9.3% in 2023–24, then rose to 20.1% in 2024–25. The school ranks well above average for how effectively it serves several student groups, including low-income students, students with disabilities, and English language learners, though results for female students have been uneven. Excel Center - Hammond is an alternative school with a very different mission, so its figures are not comparable.
