Summary:

Fort Wayne Community Schools serves about 28,537 students across 49 Indiana schools: 33 elementary schools, 10 middle schools, 5 high schools, and 1 alternative school. The district ranks 274th of 374 Indiana districts — the 27th percentile with 1 star — placing it below the state average overall, yet individual schools range from top-1% performers to some of the lowest-ranked schools in the state.

Three standouts emerge. Fred H Croninger Elementary School is the strongest school in the data set, ranked 10 of 1,015 statewide (99th percentile, 5 stars), with Math 88.35%, ELA 76.05%, and Science 71.29%, plus the lowest chronic absenteeism (1.5%) and lowest free/reduced lunch (33.28%). R Nelson Snider High School is the high school turnaround story, rising from the 35th to the 67th percentile with the district's highest graduation rate (97.0%) and the only high school SAT ELA score above the state's 51.9%. Memorial Park Middle School is the middle school standout at the 72nd percentile, 4 stars, ELA 50.26%, and 10.0% chronic absenteeism.

District-wide challenges remain. Proficiency trails state benchmarks: ELA 29.96%, Math 29.43%, Science 27.7%; SAT ELA 36.85%, SAT Math 13.56%. No high school reached the state's SAT Math rate of 25.6% — Wayne High School was at 7.4% and North Side High School at 8.51%. Chronic absenteeism is 20.2% district-wide versus 16.7% statewide, from 1.5% at Croninger to 49.6% at Fort Wayne Virtual Academy. The lowest performers — Study Elementary School (2nd percentile, ELA 8.4%) and Merle J Abbett Elementary School (6th percentile) — also have absenteeism above 30%. Poverty is not destiny, though: John S Irwin Elementary School and Robert C Harris Elementary School both have free/reduced lunch above 60% yet beat district averages, and Adams Elementary School reported an exact 0% science proficiency at all grades and 4th grade.
