Portage, Indiana is served by nine public schools — six elementary, two middle, and one high school, with no alternative school — all part of Portage Township Schools, which enrolls 5,934 students and ranks 260th of 374 Indiana districts (30th percentile, 2 stars). Portage High School is by far the largest school at 2,163 students, more than the two middle schools combined, while George L Myers Elementary School is the smallest at 332.

The clearest success stories are George L Myers Elementary School and Crisman Elementary School, the only 3-star schools, both ranking at or above the 50th percentile. Myers posts the top elementary ELA score (49.39% proficient) and climbed from the 31st to the 53rd percentile over three years; Crisman's 5th-grade ELA of 64.81% is among the highest single results in the data. Ethel R Jones Elementary School leads elementary math (47.56%) and science (37.21%) but slipped from 3 stars to 2. Rowena Kyle Elementary School has the lowest poverty (35.01% free/reduced lunch), lowest spending ($10,036) and lowest chronic absenteeism (13.0%).

Central Elementary School and Wallace Aylesworth Elementary are the only 1-star schools, with ELA at 27.59% and 29.33%, both below the district's 33.67%. Portage High School is mixed: its 94.4% graduation rate beats the state's 89.7%, but SAT Math (18.26%) and SAT EBRW (45.65%) trail the state, and its 27.3% chronic absenteeism is the city's highest. Both Willowcreek Middle School and William Fegely Middle School report unusually high Biology EOC proficiency (80% and 76.92%) versus the high school's 22.7%, likely a small test-taking group.
