Summary:

Zip code 62565 includes four Moulton Elementary School, Main Street Elementary School, Shelbyville High School, and Shelbyville Kindergarten Center, serving kindergarten through grade 12 in Shelbyville CUSD 4. The schools range from 78 to 455 students, and all four have lower chronic absenteeism than the state rate: 7%–15%, compared with 24% statewide. The clearest overall strength is ELA: all nine reported school-and-grade comparisons in 2025–26 were above state results.

Main Street stands out in third grade, with 65% proficient in ELA versus 48% statewide and 66% in math versus 49% statewide. Moulton was above the state in ELA in every reported grade, by 2.2 to 29.9 points, but its math results were uneven: fifth grade was 13 points below the state, while fourth and eighth grades were above. Shelbyville High was above the state in ACT ELA and math by 10 and 5 points, respectively, but 3 points below in science. Its 99% graduation rate was also above the state’s 90%. The Kindergarten Center had the lowest absenteeism, at 7%, but no achievement scores are reported.

Results shifted notably at Main Street: its reported all-grades IAR ELA result fell from 73% to 65% between 2024–25 and 2025–26, and math fell from 79% to 66%; its advantage over the state narrowed by 11 and 13 points, respectively. SchoolDigger rates the district 3 stars and places it at the 57th percentile statewide; its school rankings show Moulton at the 69th percentile and Shelbyville High at the 62nd in 2025–26, down from the 76th and 83rd percentiles in 2023–24. As context, free/reduced lunch eligible shares in 2024–25 ranged from 37% at the Kindergarten Center to 58% at Main Street; these figures do not explain the achievement results. Schools serve different grades and use different assessments, so their results do not support a fair overall achievement ranking.
