Boise Senior High School is a large, traditional public high school in the Boise Independent District, serving 1,512 students in grades 9–12 in Boise, ID. Once one of Idaho’s top schools — ranking 2nd in the state in 2014–15 and 4th in 2020–21 — Boise Senior has seen a sharp decline, ranking 78th of 122 Idaho high schools (36th percentile) for 2025–26. Despite a relatively low-poverty population (about 19% of students eligible for free/reduced-price lunch), the school has fallen from a 5-star rating to 2 stars, and its most recent overall rank is below the state median.

Test scores are mixed. In 2025–26, math proficiency was 39.1%, above the district (32.4%) and state (33.1%), but science proficiency was just 36.2%, below both the district (38.8%) and state (41.2%). ELA proficiency was 49.8%, slightly above the district but far below the state’s 61.3%. Science has been a persistent weakness for years. Chronic absenteeism runs about 20–22%, roughly 7 percentage points above the state average. Graduation rates, though historically strong, fell to 82.5% in 2024–25, matching the state and district. Nearby Timberline High School now outperforms Boise Senior in math, science, and ELA, with lower absenteeism, while Capital Senior High School and Borah Senior High School rank slightly below Boise Senior.

The most concerning trend is the broad-based drop in student group performance. Between 2021–22 and 2023–24, multiple subgroups fell from the 90th percentile to the 17th–38th percentile.
