Summary

Laney High School in Augusta, GA, serves approximately 736 students in grades 9-12 within the Richmond County School District, where 100% of students qualify for free or reduced lunch.

Laney faces significant challenges, most notably a chronic absenteeism rate of 50.8%—nearly three times the state average of 17.7% and well above the district's 30.3%. While this is an improvement from last year's 60.1%, it remains a major barrier. The graduation rate of 74.0% trails the district (81.7%) and state (87.2%), and the dropout rate has more than doubled in recent years to 8.0%, compared to 3.5% districtwide and 2.4% statewide. Test scores are also low: only 15.3% of students scored proficient in Algebra I and 16.4% in Biology, versus state averages of 48.1% and 47.2%, respectively. That said, these scores represent a notable improvement from the prior year, when Algebra I proficiency was just 5%.

The contrast with nearby magnet schools is striking. Johnson Health Science and Engineering Magnet School, just 0.15 miles away, boasts a 100% graduation rate, 7.5% chronic absenteeism, and 50.4% Algebra I proficiency. Davidson Fine Arts Magnet, 0.57 miles away, ranks in the 96th percentile statewide. Laney's per-student spending of $13,004 is higher than several neighboring comprehensive high schools like Glenn Hills ($12,180) and Westside ($12,192), yet outcomes remain lower. One bright spot: in 2020-2021, Laney achieved an 83% graduation rate, exceeding the district average, suggesting the school is capable of better results under certain conditions. The recent improvements in attendance and test scores may signal the start of a positive trend, but sustained progress will be essential.
