Summary

Fort Valley Middle School in Fort Valley, GA, serves 434 students in grades 6 through 8 and is part of the Peach County School District, where 100% of students qualify for free or reduced lunch.

The most striking finding is what we call the "acceleration paradox." Students placed in high school-level courses perform remarkably well: 94.7% scored proficient or better on the Algebra I End-of-Course exam in 2025-2026—nearly double the state average of 48.1%—and 63.2% passed High School Physical Science, above the state's 60.9%. This pattern has held for multiple years. However, grade-level math tells a very different story: only 18.6% of 6th graders, 19.3% of 7th graders, and 31.8% of 8th graders are proficient, compared to state averages in the low-to-mid 40s. Social studies is a particular concern, with just 17.4% of 8th graders proficient versus 40.2% statewide. The school clearly excels at identifying and preparing students for advanced coursework, but the broader student body struggles with standard grade-level content.

Compared to Byron Middle School, the district's other middle school, Fort Valley actually outperforms in Algebra I (94.7% vs. 75.9%) and Physical Science (63.2% vs. 51.9%), yet Byron ranks much higher overall (54th percentile vs. 22nd percentile) because its grade-level proficiency rates are 10-30 points higher across subjects. On a positive note, chronic absenteeism has dropped from 35.4% to 23.7% over three years, and 8th grade science proficiency has tripled from 4% to 15%. With a favorable 13:1 student-teacher ratio and rising per-student spending ($13,015), the school's biggest opportunity is translating the success of its accelerated programs to all students, particularly in grade-level math and social studies.
