Summary

Mossy Creek Middle School in Kathleen, GA, serves 796 students in grades 6-8 and is part of the Houston County School District, earning a consistent 4-star rating and ranking in the 85th percentile or higher statewide for the past three years.

The school’s standout strength is its advanced coursework program. In the most recent school year, 100% of students taking the Algebra I End-of-Course exam were proficient, and 97.3% were proficient in High School Physical Science—far exceeding district and state averages. This success extends to standard classes too: proficiency rates in 6th, 7th, and 8th-grade math ranged from 59% to 69%, which is roughly 15-20 points higher than the state average. What makes this particularly impressive is that not all nearby schools achieve this balance. For example, Thomson Middle School also has a perfect Algebra I proficiency rate but only a 40.9% proficiency rate in 6th-grade math, showing that Mossy Creek’s high achievement is more comprehensive across all grade levels and subjects.

Mossy Creek also stands out for its effectiveness with all student groups. Every reported subgroup—including male students, special education students, and Hispanic students—earned a 4-star rating, with rankings in the 84th to 88th percentile. The school also has a low chronic absenteeism rate of just 11.4%, compared to 15.6% for the district and 17.7% for the state, and this rate has steadily improved over the past four years. While Bonaire Middle School ranks higher overall, Mossy Creek outperforms other nearby schools like Northside Middle School and Huntington Middle School by significant margins in core subjects. The school achieves these results with per-student spending of $14,416—higher than Bonaire’s $11,636 but lower than several lower-performing schools in the district—suggesting efficient use of resources. Overall, Mossy Creek offers a stable, high-performing environment with strong academics, excellent advanced placement opportunities, and a supportive, engaged student body.

Open Quote Honestly, Mossy Creek is not a fair school. My daughter has been punished for something she didn't even do! Some kids spilled a drink in the cafeteria and now the WHOLE team A has assigned seats in the cafeteria, and they don't have any breaks. But team B has all of that still! And my daughter ( and all the other innocent kids ) are having a horrible time. And my daughter is being bullied, and none of the teachers do anything! One guy called my daughter a freak right in front of a teacher, and she didn't do anything! HORRIBLE SCHOOL! rating: I shouldnt even give you star! IM GLAD NEXT YEAR MY DAUGHTER DOESN'T HAVE TO BE IN MCMS ANYMORE! Close Quote
