Summary

Thomson Middle School in Centerville, GA, serves 734 students in grades 6-8 as part of the Houston County School District, holding a stable 3-star rating and ranking 217th out of 578 Georgia middle schools for the 2025-2026 school year.

The standout story at Thomson is its exceptional Algebra I performance. A remarkable 100% of Thomson students scored proficient or better on the Algebra I Milestones assessment, far exceeding the district average of 54.6% and the state average of 48.1%. This isn't a fluke—the school has hit 100% proficiency for two consecutive years. Thomson also shines for specific student groups: special education students rank in the top 16% statewide, while African American and Hispanic students both earn 4-star ratings, outperforming the school's overall ranking. The school spends $15,710 per student, notably higher than nearby Bonaire Middle School ($11,636) and Perry Middle School ($12,037), likely reflecting its commitment to a student population with significant economic needs—91% of students now qualify for free/reduced lunch, up sharply from 53% the prior year.

However, Thomson presents a paradox. While its top students excel in advanced math, grade-level math proficiency lags district averages—for example, only 40.9% of 6th graders are proficient versus the district's 49.6%. The school also trails dramatically in 8th grade High School Physical Science (70.8% vs. 92.5% district average). Chronic absenteeism is a persistent concern at 21.2%, well above the district's 15.6%. On a positive note, 8th grade science proficiency (34.4%) beats both district and state averages. Compared to peers, Thomson sits in the middle tier—above Huntington Middle School and Northside Middle School but below the high-performing quartet of Bonaire, Mossy Creek Middle School, Feagin Mill Middle School, and Perry. With a favorable 13.6:1 student-teacher ratio and strong subgroup outcomes, Thomson shows solid foundations that could benefit from targeted support in grade-level math and attendance.

Open Quote Thomson Middle School has lacking resources, could use better skilled teachers, and peer pressure cooker for female children. Two of my children went there. My daughter's attitude and ways changed drastically as soon as she started in this school. She used to love academics and was a straight A "gifted" studend prior to attending this school. Her priorities have completely shifted to very unimportant things. She's still in the gifted program but i really don't know how since she no longer has any interest in academics.

After talking with several parents of girls who attend the school, I understand that it's a common problem for most girls that attend Thomson Middle.

Keep a close watch of your daughter and stay extra, extra involved. Otherwise you'll be at a very high risk of losing her to peer pressure. Close Quote
