Summary

Flint Hill Elementary in Oxford, GA, serves approximately 848 students in Pre-K through 5th grade within the Newton County School District, and it is currently facing significant academic challenges that families will want to understand.

Recent test results show that math proficiency at Flint Hill is well below both district and state averages. For example, only 8% of 5th graders met math standards in the latest testing cycle, compared to 24.1% across the district and 44.1% statewide. Science proficiency for 5th graders is also low at 11.4%, versus 26% for the district and 44.2% for the state. The school’s statewide ranking has declined steadily over the past decade, from the 41st percentile in 2015-2016 to the 2nd percentile in 2025-2026, and it currently holds a 0-star rating. Chronic absenteeism is a major concern, with about 30% of students missing significant school days—nearly double the state average of 17.7%. This pattern has persisted for five years, suggesting it is a systemic issue rather than a temporary one.

It’s helpful to compare Flint Hill with nearby schools. East Newton Elementary, just a few miles away, serves a similarly economically disadvantaged population (over 91% free/reduced lunch) yet achieves math proficiency rates roughly 2-5 times higher than Flint Hill’s. Even more striking, Newton County Theme School at Ficquett ranks in the 90th percentile statewide with a chronic absenteeism rate of just 5.6%, compared to Flint Hill’s 30.1%. While Flint Hill spends more per student ($15,625) than many comparison schools, the investment has not yet translated into improved outcomes. For parents, this data suggests that Flint Hill is at a critical juncture, and the most pressing priorities are improving attendance and building foundational math skills—areas where neighboring schools demonstrate that progress is possible.
