Summary

Cousins Middle School in Covington, GA, serves 563 students in grades 6-8 as part of the Newton County School District, where 100% of students qualify for free or reduced lunch. The school currently ranks in the bottom fifth of Georgia middle schools (22nd percentile), though this is a modest improvement from last year's 18th percentile ranking.

The most striking bright spot is the school's Algebra I program. In the most recent testing year, 50% of students scored proficient or better—more than double the district average of 24.3% and slightly above the state average. This isn't a one-year fluke: in 2022-2023, 77.8% of Cousins students were proficient in Algebra I, compared to just 14.7% district-wide. However, this excellence doesn't extend to other subjects. Eighth-grade science proficiency sits at just 8.6% versus 29.7% statewide, and 8th grade math has declined from 22% to 15.9% proficiency while the district average improved. The school also trails significantly in HS Physical Science, where only 40.6% of students are proficient compared to 65.9% district-wide and 92.6% at nearby Veterans Memorial Middle School.

There are encouraging signs of momentum. Sixth-grade math proficiency jumped from 11.1% to 28%—now above the district average of 23.8%. Chronic absenteeism has declined steadily from 32.5% to 26.5% over three years, though it remains above the state average. The school spends $15,706 per student, the highest among comparable schools in the area, including Clements Middle School ($13,937) and Liberty Middle School ($13,029). While this investment hasn't yet translated into broad-based gains, the improving ranking, declining absenteeism, and standout Algebra I results suggest pockets of excellence that could expand with continued focus.
