Summary

Newton County Theme School at Ficquett is a PK-8 school in Covington, GA, serving 1,095 students within the Newton County district. Despite its district ranking in the bottom 20% statewide, this school consistently performs at an elite level, earning a 4-star rating for eight of the past ten years and currently ranking in the 90th percentile of all Georgia schools.

The most striking difference is in math achievement. In the most recent testing year, proficiency rates at Ficquett ranged from 63.2% in 7th grade to 92.3% on the Algebra I End of Course exam—compared to district averages of 22.7% to 30.9% and state averages of 40.7% to 48.3%. The school has achieved 100% proficiency on Algebra I in three of the past four years, meaning 8th graders are mastering high school-level math at rates nearly double the state average. This success extends across all grades and subjects, with 8th grade science and social studies proficiency rates roughly double the district averages. Nearby schools like Livingston Elementary, West Newton Elementary, and Fairview Elementary all rank in the bottom 26% statewide, making Ficquett an outlier in its own district.

What makes this achievement even more notable is the school's efficiency and consistency. Ficquett spends $12,253 per student—substantially less than the $14,000-$18,000 spent by nearby elementary schools—yet achieves dramatically better outcomes. The school also maintains a chronic absenteeism rate of just 5.6%, compared to 24.4% for the district and 17.7% statewide. With a free/reduced lunch rate that has risen from 29% to 52% over two years, the school continues to improve academically even as its student population becomes more diverse. This sustained excellence through the middle grades, combined with strong attendance and cost-effective operations, makes Ficquett a compelling example of what's possible within the Newton County system.

Open Quote I love it. I only wish that the school would continue educating until the 12th grade. And there are many parents who feel the same. Only great things about NCSA. Close Quote

Open Quote Not worth the time to apply. I thought it was an elite school vs the others ones....not at all. I thought it was an actual theme....it was not. Close Quote

Open Quote Worst school my child has ever attended. Don't waste your time applying to this school. The difference between this school curriculum and the other Newton schools is ZERO. They focus on getting parents to take off work and volunteer and my child didn't learn anything more. If your child needs help with work, they try to kick them back to their home school so the child won't effect their ratings. Close Quote

Open Quote Unnecessary race descrimination and lack of diversity from the new administration. Very unfortunate that the state could not employ a diverse group of leaders to supervise the students in this school. Today I witnessed rude and heartless front desk receptionists. Based on statements from others attending this school... there are many evidence of unfair treatments to non-whites...regardless, state administrators should start looking into these issues. Regardless, non-whites should continue to apply to this school to prevent future discrimination. Close Quote
